The Out and Employed blog provides news, career advice and job resources for ex-offenders. This site grew out of an employability skills course I teach at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center. It’s designed to be a place where former students and others looking to turn their lives around can come to share stories, ask questions and find information.
As for me, I’m a journalist with a long-time interest in criminal justice. In addition to teaching and writing about legal issues, I’ve worked with probationers in Virginia and Indiana. Please feel free to join the conversation and post your questions and/or comments. I promise I’ll do what I can to help.

Don’t see a contact form save for comments so leaving a note here. Saw/appreciated your comment on my Modern Love piece. I won’t go on in this space, but do send me a note at the email above if you like. -Larry
Hello,
This blog is phenomenal! I am a probation officer and I founded an employment program at my office a year ago after seeing firsthand the struggles convicted felons experience while seeking employment. The employment program I started is called Working with Conviction and focuses on highly motivated individuals who are genuine about seeking employment. You can see more about the program at http://www.vadoc.virginia.gov/community/programs/workingwithconviction.shtm. I would love to share notes with you at some point. Again, I am so glad I found your blog – very well done!
Suzanne
Thanks Suzanne. Glad you found it helpful. Would love to hear more about your program and will be in touch.
This is a great resource for people who are trying to get their life back on track its not easy when you have made mistakes that people cant see past
Thanks, Dory. My hope is that the more people see ex-offenders and others with records succeeding, the more they’ll be apt to give others a chance.
